Fuze Components for Munitions
Across the various branches of the military there exists a need to miniaturize fuzing systems while improving their reliability and safety. Existin commercial products are unreliable and bulky, adding to the size and weight of the ordnance. An immediate need is to create safe, more reliable, and more capable medium caliber munitions and eliminate the large and ever accumulating amount of hazardous unexploded ordinance.
Current reliability rates for some munitions rate as low as 40%. The military has set a mandate to meet 90% reliability across all munitions by the year 2018. Currently available fuzing systems use components which either cannot meet this requirement or are too large for use in smaller munitions. A key component that has been identified by the military as a very high need in this context is an ultraminiature impact switch. Over  4,000 switches have been tested with a reliability rate > 95%.
